Court Appointed Special Advocates are guardians ad litem that are officers of the court, who as volunteers, their responsibility is to represent and advocate for the best interests of children subject to child protection cases initiated by the Department of Health and Human Services.
CASAs undergo rigorous training and maintain continuing education regarding child welfare. Their responsibilities include investigation, interviewing, and writing briefs for the court regarding the interests of children, as well as routinely testifying. Advocates play an active, but behind the scenes role in the court process depending on the needs if the children in specific cases.
